A Commitment to Sustainability
A significant part of Tierra Atacama’s renovation process is our ongoing connection to the local Atacameño culture.
Tierra Atacama, committed to sustainability and a connection with local culture, continues the tradition of incorporating centuries-old construction techniques from the region into every corner of its ongoing renovation. This massive project is progressing rapidly, gearing up for its grand opening in April 2025.
This renovation will be evident not only inside the hotel but also from the exterior, with its beautiful adobe walls—a type of construction commonly found throughout San Pedro de Atacama. These bricks serve to define spaces and act as a sort of enclosure around the hotel.
Made with straw, water, clay, and other elements, these reddish blocks blend seamlessly with the surroundings, making them a sustainable and indigenous technique that also provides thermal insulation.
Germán Díaz Flores and Manuel Vera are part of the Tierra Atacama team dedicated to crafting these bricks. Today, they’ve shown us a fascinating process that even involves using tunas, the fruit of the cactus, as part of the production. They also emphasize the importance of dedication and care in this often-overlooked process, as it’s key to producing a high-quality brick.
As we continue to add details to this incredible renovation underway at Tierra Atacama, we invite you to plan your next visit to San Pedro. See you in 2025!
