Designed by renowned Chilean architects Rodrigo Searle and Matías González, Tierra Atacama was built on the site of a long-abandoned cattle corral, and retains the ancient adobe mud brick walls of the original 150-year-old bull pen at its entrance. The walls and existing vegetation on site have been mindfully integrated by Chilean landscape architect Teresa Moller, who has created a true sense of place within a fertile and lush oasis in the desert.
Common areas flow seamlessly from indoors to out, as guests gather to share the day’s discoveries while enjoying a drink from the bar, overlooking the ever-present silhouette of the Licancabur Volcano. Indoors, handcrafted furnishings invite lounging in the sun or fireside with a book, while the outdoor terrace beckons as the sun sets over the desert, casting a rosy hue over the landscape beyond.
The restaurant is designed to immerse diners in the environment, with floor-to-ceiling windows capturing views all the way to the horizon, softened by sheer white drapes. Dappled light dances across organic textures during the day, lending a warm ambience. As evening falls over the desert, soft lighting creates an inviting space as a canopy of glowing stars appear in the night sky, setting the scene for a celebration of local produce and honoring traditional north Chilean recipes with a contemporary twist.
Uma, or ‘water’ in the Aymara language, is celebrated at Uma Spa, a welcome oasis in the heart of the desert. Surrounded by lush gardens, an infinity pool and hot tub enjoy uninterrupted views of the Licancabur Volcano, and sun loungers beckon for lazy afternoons by the pool. All water at Tierra Atacama is extracted from a well on site, to avoid tapping into the town’s supply. The water is then treated by a reverse osmosis plant, enabling self-sufficiency. We also reuse grey water for irrigation, reviving arable land and transforming what was once an abandoned site into lush, fertile gardens, full of life.
We offer a range of excursions that give guests the opportunity to experience the ancient history and local traditions of our region. Atacameño culture and history is celebrated throughout the hotel’s interior design, from our intricately detailed wall map to handcrafted figurines, handwoven textiles and artefacts from across the region.
