From Machuca to Río Grande
Begin in Machuca (4,000m) and follow the Peñaliri River through Altiplano landscapes, spotting llamas and birdlife. Pause for lunch in Peñaliri before continuing past ancient terraces and cacti to Río Grande.
View DetailsThe adventure begins near the life-giving banks of the Salado River, at 3,000 metres above sea level. From here, the trail gradually leaves the river behind, entering the arid folds of the gorge. En route, the 10,000-year-old petroglyphs of Yerbas Buenas emerge from volcanic stone, offering insight into a time when this region formed a vital crossroads for trade and migration.
Continuing through undulating paths, rocky outcrops and hidden caves, the trek builds toward its finale in Rainbow Valley, where multicoloured cliffs and mineral-rich hillsides create an otherworldly panorama. Descending through this vibrant terrain, you’ll meet your driver at the valley’s opposite end.
As the day draws to a close, enjoy a well-deserved lunch—a culinary homage to the flavours of the Atacama.
