Five Magical Days in San Pedro de Atacama
There is so much to do in this magical place that you must stay five days to fit it all in!
Every 21st of June, festivities begin in northern Chile as the indigenous people come together to celebrate the rebirth of the sun. The Aymaras celebrate the Machaq Mara or “Atacameño New Year”, while the Quechua celebrate the Inti Raymi, which is the ancient festival of the sun.
Although these festivals are different, both honor the return of the sun to its maximum splendor and the beginning of a new life cycle. As autumn concludes, the earth welcomes once again the nutrients provided by the rains and the energy provided by the sun. Times of hope, renewal and gratitude are celebrated for all the fruits that the Pachamama offers.
These celebrations are characterized by vibrant colors and contagious joy. Traditional percussion instruments such as the zampoña and the charango accompany many dances and ancestral songs that honor the king star: the sun.
Much more than a simple party, this festival reflects the Andean worldview and its connection with the peoples, which reaffirms its cultural identity and strengthens community ties, when everyone unites to show respect for Mother Earth.
During this time, we celebrate life, hope and the deep connection that unites us all with nature.
